Trump's Framework of Punishment and Favor

Donald Trump's intense appetite for revenge has quickly morphed into a structured system. During the past year, the president's rage and impulses have adopted the shape of government actions in a manner analogous to earlier repressive systems. Government personnel who resist his demands are immediately removed and succeeded by supporters. Opposing leaders who question him encounter prosecution, court proceedings and sanctions. Adversaries have been designated under presidential memoranda as “anti-American”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with legal action as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Every case involving prosecution of critics and protection for loyalists displays its own unique features. Yet, notwithstanding their individual nature, they represent examples of what has developed as a calculated approach. Such episodes are anything but coincidental. His removal of DoJ attorneys and law enforcement agents, alongside his placement of devotees in key roles, started rapidly, soon developed a consistency, and has now been formed into a system. DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been remade into ideological organizations under the president's clear orders to execute his wishes. Wrongdoing has been rendered standard. It constitutes the retribution system.

Leadership is more concerned with targeting the leader's supposed enemies than they are with defending our national security.

Inside the System

The origin of this system has been exposed in the legal complaint of multiple former top Federal Bureau officials filed in late summer in the judicial system in Washington against FBI director a senior appointee and attorney general Pam Bondi for unlawful firing in “a campaign of retribution against the officials for what the accused deemed to be a refusal to exhibit proper political loyalty”. The document states that a former acting director, the ex- acting FBI director, describes a discussion in which Patel “openly confessed the impropriety of his actions”.

Driscoll had attempted to shield agency personnel from being dismissed, the lawsuit claims. Patel told him that “White House figures” – perceived by Driscoll to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to remove anyone who they identified as having been involved in a law enforcement case against him. The document goes on: “The director stated that he had to fire the personnel his bosses told him to remove, because his ability to keep his own position was contingent on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the President. Patel commented that there was no way he or him could do to prevent these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency tried to put the President in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When he told him he was breaking the bureau's own internal rules, the director allegedly said “he recognized that and he realized the nature of the immediate dismissals were probably improper”.

Broad Impact

After his claimed confession to him, the justice department and the FBI have been weakened and reorganized for Trump's revenge apparatus. Six of the bureau's senior executives were fired or forced out in the first days of the administration. About numerous lawyers at the justice department have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. At least multiple federal prosecutors, such as those in the New York office, quit in dissent over what they viewed as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the city leader, the mayor, in as a trade for his collaboration with Trump's federal agency arrests of foreign nationals. The ethics division of DoJ, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been decimated: 70% of its employees has left. A third of senior leaders at the justice department have left. The division implementing ecological regulations has lost half its management.

Rewards and Punishments

In the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, quit in protest against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. The border official, Trump's “immigration leader,” appeared as the implementer with Adams on Fox News to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in NYC.”. And, a former official, earlier the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who negotiated the arrangement, was given an judicial position, a possible springboard to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for crimes perpetrated while in power, awarded by the remarkable decision of the conservative on the supreme court, thus thwarting his legal action over the political violence and maintaining his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he stands to protect his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to permit misconduct. The consequence of the court judgment saturates his presidency and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has escalated. As a past leader's administration lawyer the figure commented about the Watergate
